Your Word is a lantern to my feet
And a light upon my path.
(Psalm 119:105)

Set your troubled hearts at rest.
Trust in God always,
Trust also in me.
(John 14:1)

To the Beloved of St. James,

Words from scripture are helpful to turn to as we continue to face many challenges as we move through such unprecedented times together. In recent weeks, the 8:00 pm Compline Prayer Group (join here) has discussed the above passages along with a daily scripture reading. We draw strength from our prayer together and mutual support.

We continue to hold you, your needs and requests in our daily prayer and welcome you to join us.

Sunday 8:00 am Service

We are now holding a weekly small group, pre-health screened, socially distant, service on the church patio each Sunday. This service will be live-streamed each week and posted on the St. James' website, YouTube, and Facebook pages.

To assure an abundance of caution, seating is preassigned to allow family groups and individuals more than 6 feet of separation. Our services are being held outside in a well-ventilated area with shade provided. Following a temperature check, all are required to use hand sanitizer. Chairs and restrooms are cleansed after each individual use and we continue to wear masks following the advice of our Senior Warden, Lucy Jones “not to share the air we breathe.”

As a precaution, there is no communal singing, music is by organ or strings only, collection plates are not passed person to person, prayers are whispered, and groups do not intermingle. Communion is by bread alone and the host is not touched by the priest. Cones are placed in the parking lot to allow space between cars and allow social distancing when you arrive and depart.

We ask you not to attend if you are ill, or currently caring for someone who is ill, have traveled by plane or public transportation, have socialized in a large social group, or if you have cared for or have had close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19 in the past 2 weeks. The service is available online for your prayer and participation.

To attend our Sunday Service, please call (626 799-9194) or email the Church Office by noon on Thursday. We must to know who plans to attend to assure spacing and set up of appropriate seating.

In Lieu of Flowers

It has been a tradition at St. James' to commemorate anniversaries, birthdays or remember a loved one by providing flowers for the Sunday altar. While our services are being held outside, we enjoy the beauty of nature ( and the noise of the parrots!) However, in lieu of flowers, you may now sponsor the Live Streaming of our weekly service. We will dedicate the service to honor the occasion or person you wish to remember.

Please call or email the office if you wish to dedicate an upcoming Sunday as a Memorial.

Class Offerings

Growing in Love in Times of Division

Beginning Thursday night, July 30th, at 7:00 pm, we will be offering a new 4 week online discussion group.

Discussion will be led by long time parishioner, Allison Rector. Vestry members, Allison Rector, Caitlyn Ference-Saunders, Pamela Scott-Johnson, and Mike Mischler have designed this offering as a gift to our church community. For more information please watch this brief video introduction by Allison.

Participants will be asked to review materials in advance of class to help create shared language and understanding to help facilitate discussion. To register and receive a zoom invitation for the class please sign up here:

To prepare for this week’s discussion entitled “Locating Ourselves,” please review these videos: Empathy with Brene Brown (2:30 min), The Myth of Race (3 min), Understanding My Privilege with Sue Borrego (12 min), and Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man (9:27 min).

Reflectionary Group

A weekly discussion about upcoming Sunday scriptures continues to meet each Thursday morning at 10:00 am. Rev. Michelle leads this thoughtful group. You are welcome to join (link here).

More Updates

Watch out for Phishing Scams

Recently we have had reports from staff and parishioners of emails that seem to come from me asking for an urgent favor or similar language. These have not originated from St. James' and are scams asking for money. If you receive an email like this, double check the actual email address it's coming from, and DO NOT respond. Official St. James' email addresses end with (NOT,, etc.).

On a Personal Note

I will be out of the office on medical leave for a brief period of time. I can no longer avoid having another knee replacement surgery. While out of the office, I will remain in close contact with our Senior Warden and church staff. Our services will be in the trustworthy and capable hands of Rev. Michelle and Rev. Gethin beginning on August 9th.

Again, let us continue to hold one another closely in prayer and especially remember the Workers of Mercy serving on the front lines of this pandemic and researchers attempting to develop a vaccine. May God continue to bless you and your loved ones.
