To the Beloved of St. James’,
Thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers as I have been recovering from surgery and a few complications. As we enter fall, much continues to be happening at St. James'!
We continue to hold services each Sunday on the patio at 9:00 am. You are welcome to attend. We are practicing social distancing, wearing masks, and being health checked at the door. This service is live streamed online for those who prefer to worship with us from afar.
On Sunday, October 11th, we will belatedly celebrate the Feast of St. Francis with an all-parish virtual Blessing of the Animals at 11:00 am via Zoom. All creatures great and small are invited to join us in person (online) this day. A special blessing will take place for our fur covered, scaled, swimming, slithering and winged friends. Send a picture of your pet, preferably digital, to the church office (email@example.com) no later than October 7th to be included in the online St. James' Pet Parade!
We continue to face significant financial challenges due to the pandemic. A very generous donor has presented us with a $25,000 gift with a second matching grant up to the amount of $25,000. This is a tremendous blessing for us and has allowed us to refrain from another level of staff layoffs for this budget year. We have a potential of a $75,000 gift to help offset our significant deficit. Whatever amount you may consider giving, the donor will match it. We are grateful for such generosity. To contribute you may send a check noting that it is a contribution for the matching grant or make a contribution online at give2sjcsp.org. Thank you for considering this. Any amount offered will help!
These are most difficult days. With the stress of the wild fires, potential evacuations, smoke filled air, the ongoing pandemic, social isolation, unrest and upcoming elections, we are aware of the need to be together and support one another. In the near future a second letter will announce more class offerings and opportunities to meet with church friends in small group rooms via Zoom. We miss seeing one another!
Beginning this coming Wednesday, September 23rd, Dr. Stewart Davenport, Associate Professor of History at Pepperdine University, will offer a 4-week online class for the parish entitled “American Racism: History and Healing” from 7:00 until 8:00 pm. Stewart earned his PhD in 2001 at Yale University. Please see his syllabus here, it is quite impressive. Click here for the Zoom invitation.
Thank you for your continued prayer for our church and members. Know that you remain in our prayers each and every day. Continue to check our web site for classes and services. See you at the Blessing of the Animals! Let’s laugh together.
Blessings to you and those you love,
Rev. Anne Tumilty
